Buzz cut lengths: what to ask your barber

A buzz cut is a very short haircut created mainly with clippers. It can be one length all over, or have shorter sides with a blended transition. To explain the result you want, separate two decisions: how much hair to leave on top and how to finish the sides.

If this is your first very short haircut and you are unsure, discuss a longer starting length. Your barber can take more off during the appointment; getting the length back means waiting for it to grow.

What do clipper guard numbers mean?

A haircut “number” usually refers to the guard attached to the clipper, which sets an approximate cutting length. A number 2 does not mean 2 millimetres. The common system described in Wahl’s guide to clipper guards 🔗 uses these lengths:

GuardApproximate length
#13 mm
#26 mm
#310 mm
#413 mm

Treat this as a guide for the conversation. The particular guards, blade setting and cutting technique affect the result. Wahl also sells sets marked 9 mm and 12 mm. Confirm the length in millimetres and the part of the head you mean, rather than asking for “a number 2” on its own.

Wahl’s buzz cut guide 🔗 also recommends starting with a longer guard when you are unsure how short to go.

Choosing the length on top

A few millimetres make a noticeable difference with very short hair. These are useful starting points to discuss:

  • Around 3 mm: a very close cut that makes the scalp and natural hairline more visible.
  • Around 6 mm: more hair remains, while the overall shape stays short and neat.
  • Around 10–13 mm: more length to start with if you are hesitant about the change. At the longer end, discuss the shape too, as the result can move towards other short styles.

Hair density, colour and growth direction affect how a length looks. A reference photo helps explain your preference, but the same guard will not necessarily recreate that appearance on your hair.

Mention any fringe you want to keep, or whether you still want enough hair to style forwards. You may find that another short haircut suits that preference better than an evenly cropped buzz cut.

A buzz cut with a fade, or one length all over?

“Buzz cut” describes the short haircut; “fade” describes the transition between lengths on the sides and back. You can combine them, or choose an even length across the head.

For a buzz cut fade, say how high you want the short section to reach and whether the shortest part should go down to skin. “Short on the sides” leaves room for very different interpretations.

This gallery photo shows a fade with longer hair on top. Use it to look at the side blend separately from the length of the top.

For a fuller explanation of blending options, see the taper fade guide. The main decision here is how short you want the hair itself to be.

What to say in the chair

Adapt this example to the length and finish you want:

“I’d like a buzz cut with around 10 mm on top and a low fade on the sides, without going down to skin. This is my first cut this short. Can we leave it longer to begin with and then decide? Here’s a photo of the shape I like.”

Bring front and side views. Discuss whether you prefer a natural-looking hairline and neckline, and how the sideburns should meet your beard if you have one. These choices are separate from the clipper number.

How much upkeep does it need?

Very short hair leaves less to style each morning. Keeping a crisp fade and defined edges still means refreshing them as the cut grows out, according to the look you want to maintain.

Ask when to return based on your chosen cut and how sharp you want it to look. There is more guidance in how often to get a haircut.

Booking a haircut in Varna

Check Anya’s current services and prices. If you are unsure whether to book “Short haircut” or “Haircut”, ask Anya which service matches your preferred length and blend. The name “buzz cut” alone does not describe all the work involved.

A consultation is included with the haircut. If you are still comparing styles, the haircut quiz can give you ideas to discuss with Anya.
